Overcoming Barriers to Mental Health Support

2 min 34 sec

A study by the Better Health Channel revealed that around one in five Australians experience a mental health illness each year. Additionally, 45% of adults in the country have been affected by a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. While seeking professional psychology services is one of the most effective ways to address mental health concerns, many individuals still face significant barriers that prevent them from accessing the care they need.

Common Barriers to Seeking Mental Health Support

Research indicates that almost 42% of young individuals suffering from mental health problems do not seek proper support services. Some of the key factors preventing people from seeking mental health supports include:

Financial Limitations

Many people find the cost of mental health support prohibitive. This is why The Personnel Group ensures that our professional health services are financially accessible by accepting NDIS funding for self and plan-managed participants, Medicare mental health care plans, TAC referrals, and privately funded appointments.

Stigma

The stigma associated with mental health issues can discourage individuals from seeking help. Normalising conversations about mental health and providing supportive environments are crucial steps in overcoming this barrier.

Lack of Access to Services

Limited availability of trained specialists and appointment slots can make it challenging to find timely support. Since adding psychology services to our offerings in late 2022, we have expanded our team to include psychologists in Albury, Canberra, Wollongong, and Melbourne (Altona North, Bundoora, and Werribee). For areas where face-to-face appointments are not feasible, we offer telehealth services to ensure comprehensive coverage across Victoria, NSW, and the ACT.

Cultural Barriers

Cultural differences and language barriers can also impede access to mental health services. Our health team includes psychologists fluent in multiple languages, including Turkish, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Mandarin, ensuring that language is not a barrier to receiving proper care.

Lack of Awareness

Some individuals may not be aware of the resources available to assist with mental health. Raising awareness about the importance of mental health and the services available is essential for breaking down this barrier.

At The Personnel Group, we are dedicated to making mental health services accessible and effective for all our clients.
