Key Points:

  • NDIS funding for psychology is available for capacity-building supports that improve daily living skills and functional capacity, not for clinical treatment of mental health conditions.
  • Psychology services under the NDIS fall under “Improved Daily Living” and “Improved Relationships” categories within Capacity Building Supports to help participants develop independence and social skills.
  • The eligibility for NDIS funding for counselling support depends on how the services align with your NDIS goals and contribute to building your capacity for independent living and community participation.
  • The Personnel Group provides NDIS-funded mental health services for children, teens, and adults through in-person or telehealth sessions.

Summary:

The NDIS can fund psychology and counselling services that support skill-building, emotional wellbeing, and independence, but not clinical treatment or diagnosis. These mental health supports are typically included under Capacity Building categories like Improved Daily Living and Improved Relationships. The Personnel Group offers NDIS-funded mental health support, including psychology and counselling for participants of all ages.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as looking after your physical wellbeing. For many NDIS participants, accessing the right support, such as psychology or counselling, can be life-changing.

If you’re living with anxiety, autism, ADHD, trauma, or a psychosocial disability, having someone to talk to and work through your goals with can make daily life feel more manageable

But, like many NDIS participants, you’re also probably wondering if this government-funded insurance program covers psychology or counselling services. In this article, we’ll help you understand what types of mental health supports may be funded through your NDIS plan and how The Personnel Group can help you access them.

Does the NDIS Cover Psychology Support?

The short answer is yes, but with some important distinctions. The NDIS may fund psychology and counselling supports, but not for the clinical treatment of mental health conditions.

Instead, NDIS funding for psychology focuses on supports that help improve your functional capacity and daily living skills related to your disability.

These supports are designed to help you manage the impact of your disability on your ability to participate in daily life, work, study, and social activities.

Rather than treating mental health conditions clinically, NDIS-funded psychology services concentrate on building your capacity to live more independently and achieve your personal goals.

What Category Does Psychology Fall Under the NDIS?

NDIS funding for mental health or psychology support generally falls under two main categories within your Capacity Building Supports budget:

Improved Daily Living

This category focuses on building the practical skills and strategies you need to manage daily tasks and activities. A psychologist can help you with:

  • Developing coping mechanisms for emotional and cognitive challenges
  • Improving motivation, focus, and decision-making skills
  • Building resilience and independence
  • Addressing barriers to achieving your NDIS goals

Improved Relationships

This category supports you in developing and maintaining positive relationships and social skills. Psychology services can assist with:

  • Improving communication and social interaction skills
  • Managing conflict and building stronger relationships
  • Addressing social isolation and promoting community participation

All of these supports are designed to help you better navigate life with your disability, not to treat a diagnosis, but to help you reach your objectives.

Are You Eligible for NDIS Funding for Mental Health?

It’s important to understand that not all NDIS participants can automatically receive NDIS funding for counselling or psychology services.

This support is provided when it aligns with your NDIS goals and is considered necessary to help build your capacity and improve your daily living. Psychology services are usually funded when they:

  • Help build independence and life skills
  • Improve community and social connection
  • Address challenges linked to your disability
  • Contribute to achieving specific NDIS goals outlined in your plan
  • Are based on evidence-based strategies and interventions

The key is demonstrating how psychology support will help you work towards your NDIS goals and build your capacity to participate more fully in daily life, work, study, or social activities.

How to Access Psychology or Counselling Services Through the NDIS

To access psychology or counselling through your NDIS plan, you’ll first need to check whether you have funding available under the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living category.

If this funding isn’t “stated” (meaning it’s not tied to a specific provider), you have some flexibility in choosing who you work with.

If you have funding available, your next steps will depend on your plan type:

  • Self-managed: You can choose any psychologist or counsellor and pay them directly.
  • Plan-managed: You can work with any provider (registered or not), and your plan manager will handle the payments.
  • NDIA-managed: You must see a psychologist or counsellor who is registered with the NDIS.

Once you confirm your funding, you’re ready to book a session with a provider who understands your needs.
