At The Personnel Group, we know meaningful employment is about more than matching skills to roles – it’s about understanding the whole person. Gary’s journey is a powerful example of how patience, trust, and the right employer partnership can make all the difference.

Understanding Gary’s Journey with Inclusive Employment Australia

Gary, an Inclusive Employment Australia customer supported by our Deception Bay team, had been working steadily for many years. But early last year, his life took an unexpected turn. A family tragedy, combined with a sudden change in workplace management, created a perfect storm. Gary lost his job and soon after received a late diagnosis of depression and anxiety, alongside a previously identified learning disability.

How The Personnel Group Built Trust and Personalised Support with Gary

When Gary connected with us, it was clear he was highly motivated to return to work — but equally clear that his path forward would require care, understanding, and the right support.

Our Employment Mentor, quickly recognised that Gary’s anxiety could make the job search and interview process especially challenging. Together, they focused on finding not just a suitable role, but an employer who would approach the process with patience, empathy, and openness.

Creating the Right Employer Connection

That’s where Micheal, our Workforce Solutions Consultant, stepped in. He had been building a strong relationship with a local employer and believed they could be a great match for Gary. Even though the business wasn’t actively hiring, Micheal advocated for Gary, highlighting his experience and the strong alignment between the role and the work Gary had previously done successfully. Impressed by Gary’s background and reassured by the support we could provide, the employer agreed to meet with him, making Gary our very first referral to the business.

On interview day, Micheal picked Gary up and transported him to the site, helping ease some of the pressure. They were warmly welcomed by the business owners and the Production Manager, who took the time to show Gary around the facility. While Gary toured the workplace, Micheal spoke with the management team about how we could support both Gary and the business through ongoing mentoring and tailored workplace support.

After the tour, despite the positive environment, the moment became overwhelming for Gary. It was then that Micheal identified that Gary was highly anxious. Micheal responded with empathy, calmness, and professionalism, supporting Gary to leave the site safely and comfortably.

Fostering a Truly Inclusive Work Environment for Gary

Micheal explained the situation to the employer, who responded in exactly the way we hope all employers would. They were incredibly understanding, expressing genuine care for Gary’s wellbeing and reassuring us that when Gary feels ready, the door remains open for a paid trial.

While Gary hasn’t yet returned to the workplace, this experience has been a significant step forward. It reinforced that he is valued, capable, and deserving of understanding and respect. It also highlighted the importance of strong employer relationships — and the impact of taking the time to do things the right way.

Gary’s story is a reminder that success isn’t always immediate employment — it’s progress, dignity, and creating opportunities where people feel safe to try again. Some outcomes can’t be measured, but our core mission is clear – helping people live full lives. We’re proud to stand alongside customers like Gary and employers who truly believe in inclusive employment.
