Not-for-profit employment service provider The Personnel Group says 2021 NSW Youth Week is a perfect catalyst for employers to think about taking on young workers.

The theme for NSW Youth Week, Together more than ever, reflected the tough economic and social conditions of the past 12 months and The Personnel Group believes Australia’s youth would play a key role in the COVID-19 pandemic recovery by stepping up to fill vacancies and help local economies rebound.

Since being rolled out in 2016 The Personnel Group’s Transition to Work (TtW) program has helped thousands of young people kick start their careers.

“Youth Week has been part of the NSW landscape for almost as long as The Personnel Group and this year’s theme: Together more than ever is close to our heart,” Tracey Fraser, The Personnel Group Chief Executive Officer, said.

“Our very successful Transition to Work program, for young people who may have left school before completing year 12, is all about helping young people find employment and reconnecting with education.

“In the past 12 months our dedicated TtW team has secured long term employment or education for more than 1000 young people in rural NSW.”

Transition to Work helps young people aged 15-24 who have not completed their secondary schooling.

The Personnel Group delivers this program across Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Yarrawonga, Griffith and Wagga.

For Transition to Work participant Jye James a work placement trial with Lavington-based Border Benchtops has opened the door to a career after he was this week offered a traineeship.

“The big focus was getting Jye a job, he was starting from scratch and now he is going to get a qualification. It’s a beautiful story, a success story,” The Personnel Group employment consultant Janet Banda said.

Border Benchtops manufacture products such as kitchen and bathroom benchtops.

“We were impressed by Jye’s work ethic, he’s committed and keen to learn new skills,” Border Benchtops’ Trent Basham said.

It was a similar story for Mason Bryce who secured work at The Cycle Station in Albury.

“I did a path internship with The Cycle Station for 12 weeks and learnt a lot. Jason (Nicholls) and the whole team have been really good,” Mason said.

Jason Nicholls said Mason was a great asset.

“We’ve been impressed with Mason, he’s really developed his work and social skills,” Jason Nicholls said.

Transition to Work is a free program and can connect employers with keen, work ready jobseekers who are eager to get working. It provides practical training, work experience to build a young person’s skills, confidence and readiness to engage in work.

The program also focuses on ensuring jobseekers understand what is expected in the workplace and to develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours expected by employers.
